-
- %JR%Firstly please let me congratulate you for producing the excellent Pipeline column, I look
- %JL%forward to it every month. I was particularly pleased with the article in the June edition of
- Archive about using PipeDream as a relational database.
-
- %JR%There is a problem using VLOOKUP which I have never seen mentioned anywhere else. It is
- %JR%fully described in the attached letter which I sent to Colton Software. Their reply was as
- follows:

-
-
- %JR%I was more than slightly surprised because I would have thought this was an extremely
- %JL%common requirement and no-one seems to have noticed that it doesn't work. Surely most
- %JR%business users will want to look up something which varies with the date, say the VAT rate
- %JL%applicable, or the interest rate to apply on a given date. I have given details of a workaround
- in the letter to Colton.
-
- %JR%I am enclosing a disc with a couple of spreadsheets which illustrate this problem and the
- %JL%workaround. They might be of interest to others as they can be used to predict what your gas
- %JR%and electricity bills will be, given just the meter reading, assuming charge rates (using
- %JL%dependent document) have not changed. Details of annual consumption can be fed to
- Presenter II or Graphbox if required. I will also include copies of these letters on the disc.
-
- %JR%I do like the idea of a Quarterly PipeLine disc and enclose £5.00 for a copy in the hope that
- this will soon be available.

- %JR%"Thank you for your comments in your letter dated 22/7/90.
- %JL%We are slightly surprised at the behaviour you have
- %JR%experienced using the VLOOKUP function and feel that
- %JL%inexact dates should be matched in VLOOKUP. We will
- endeavour to fix this in future versions...etc."
